How to Increase the Resolution of an Image in Photoshop
We live in an age where visual culture is on the rise. Nowadays, everyone snaps pictures with their phones. They usually post them online as well, and use them as a way to communicate with others. The better the quality of the photo, the more people will comment on it or ‘’like’’ the post.
Images are just as important in the business world. They can have a tremendous impact on your success. Whether you want to showcase your offer, illustrate the type of services you provide, or simply reinforce your brand message, you can do it all by adding snazzy images to your website.
To ensure your images always look pixel-perfect, it’s important to stick to recommended social media image sizes. It goes without saying that using the highest resolution photos available is paramount. That way you’ll inspire your customers to engage more with you. Even if the original quality of your files is not the finest, don’t worry. There’s actually a way to increase the resolution of an image in Photoshop, and we’ll show you how to do it in a snap.
Step 1
For starters, open your image in Adobe Photoshop. Next, select Image > Image Size from the menu at the top of the screen. Here, you can see the dimensions of your image (and resize them, if need be), as well as the resolution (pixels per inch) the image will be printed in.
Step 2
We’re interested in the Resolution field. As you can see, the current resolution of our image is 72 pixels. To get an image that will have professional image quality, we’ll have to enter the new value in the Resolution field.
Step 3
Before you proceed to change the resolution of your image, it’s good to learn a thing or two about the Resample Image option. This is one of the most important options in the Image Size dialogue box. Resampling an image means changing its number of pixels. You can either downsample or upsample, depending on whether you want to eliminate or add pixels. If you don’t want to change the pixel dimensions of your image, uncheck the Resample Image option.
Step 4
Next, change the resolution of the image by entering your desired value. See how the number of pixels is still the same? That’s because you’ve unticked the Resample Image option beforehand.
Here’s a little hint: 240 pixels per inch is the resolution many people stick to, as it gives you sharp and clear images. However, you can also upscale it to 300 pixels per inch, as that is pretty much the industry standard.
Step 5
In case you’d like to play a bit with the pixel resolution, make sure to check the Resample Image box. By doing that, the dimensions of your image will change along with the resolution.
Step 6
Once you’re done with all the changes and you’ve successfully improved the resolution of your image, click OK and save the file.
Conclusion
By following our simple 6-step tutorial, you’ll be able to increase the resolution of your images in Adobe Photoshop like a true pro. Just don’t forget – the higher the resolution, the larger the file size. Your WordPress website might load slower, which is why it’s important to pay special attention to image optimization. On the other hand, it may not always be possible to perform a miracle and improve the image quality, especially if you’re working with a super low-resolution file. However, you should always do your best. So, fire up your Photoshop and start creating sharp, high-quality images no one will be able to resist.
