however, that the ability to search isn\u2019t the only thing that matters about the search function \u2013 the presentation of the results matters, too. <strong>You can affect the presentation in two ways, by changing the parameters of the search, or by changing how the search results page looks and behaves.<\/strong> That\u2019s one of the reasons why you\u2019d want to create a custom search results page.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;28px&#8221;][vc_column_text]Every new thing a visitor sees on your website, be it a page or a post, can either persuade them to stay on your website longer or make them go away. <strong>This is the mindset you\u2019d have when optimizing any other page on your website, and there\u2019s no reason why you wouldn\u2019t apply it to a search results page.<\/strong> Still, that brings us to the problem, though \u2013 the search results page isn\u2019t ordinary.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space href=\"https:\/\/qodeinteractive.com\/themes-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WordPress theme<\/a> you\u2019re using. <strong>When you perform the search function, the results are displayed on a page using the template as dictated by the search.php file, if it\u2019s there.<\/strong> If not, WordPress uses the index.php file instead.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;28px&#8221;][vc_column_text]The search results page isn\u2019t a regular page \u2013 <a If you don\u2019t have <a href=\"https:\/\/qodeinteractive.com\/magazine\/exploring-wordpress-5-9\/\">WordPress 5.9<\/a> installed and you\u2019re not using a block theme, you won\u2019t be able to create or edit a search page like you would any other page. <strong>You\u2019ll still have options, though, and we\u2019ll let you know what they are.<\/strong> First, however, we\u2019ll show you how <a href=\"https:\/\/qodeinteractive.com\/magazine\/all-you-need-to-know-about-wordpress-fse-full-site-editing\/\">full site editing<\/a> makes your life just a tad easier by letting you do something as awesome as customizing your WordPress results page using the Site Editor.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;68px&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"qodef-h4\"><a id=\"customize-search-results-page-using-the-site-editor\"><\/a>How to Customize a WordPress Search Results Page Using the Site Editor<\/h2>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]If you have WordPress 5.9 installed and you\u2019ve selected a block theme for your website,<strong> you can rely on the Site Editor to give you access to the search results page<\/strong>. With a block theme enabled, head over to <em>Appearance &gt; Editor<\/em>, and then choose Templates from the Editor menu. It is followed by a search bar, which can come in handy when there are no results for the page to display.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;28px&#8221;][vc_column_text]The results themselves are displayed using the Query Loop block \u2013 <strong>an advanced block you\u2019ll have to dabble with if you want to change how the results are displayed on the page<\/strong>. The bottom of the page is reserved for the footer.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;72px&#8221;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"qodef-h5\">Changing the Results Layout<\/h3>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]If you want to change how the posts look on your WordPress search results page, <strong>you can dive into the Post Template located within the Query Loop block<\/strong>. They should, however, have a feature that lets you edit templates or theme files. That feature isn\u2019t readily found in free page builders, so you\u2019ll need to invest in a premium page builder to access it.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;28px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/elementor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Elementor<\/a>, for example, is a very popular page builder that comes in a free and a premium version. Still, if you know how to code, it will give you everything you need to write yourself a new search results page.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;28px&#8221;][vc_column_text]You can find all the theme files you can edit by going to <em>Appearance &gt; Theme Editor<\/em>. <strong>You can look around if you want, but you shouldn\u2019t make any changes unless you know what you\u2019re doing.<\/strong> Even then, you\u2019ll probably want to create a child theme first \u2013 it\u2019s much safer and more forgiving of mistakes.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;28px&#8221;][vc_column_text]<strong>When you\u2019ve created the child theme, you can come back to the Theme Editor and edit its search.php file to customize the search results page.<\/strong> If you can\u2019t find a search.php file, you can create one manually. There\u2019s no need to change the whole search results page if that\u2019s the only change you want to make.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=&#8221;28px&#8221;][vc_column_text]The <a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.org\/plugins\/better-search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Better Search<\/a> plugin will allow you to choose how the search results are sorted, and which parts of the content \u2013 the title or the body \u2013 are more important for searching. You can also add <a href=\"https:\/\/qodeinteractive.com\/magazine\/live-ajax-search-in-wordpress\/\">Ajax search<\/a> to your website to allow the visitors to see the results as they\u2019re typing the query.
